Franz Peter Scheuermann (Dec. 28, 1935 – Oct. 27, 2023)

Throughout the three decades in which the town of Stowe was home to architect Peter Scheuermann, his residential and commercial designs came to pepper the landscape, imbuing the town with the particular character people have come to embrace and enjoy today.

Growing up in Westfield, NJ, the youngest of 4 attained his architectural degree at the University of Notre Dame, where he also sang as a proud member and president of the Notre Dame Glee Club.

After serving in the US Air Force, Peter settled in Stowe in 1964, drawn by his father Otto’s affection for the area, which reminded him of his homeland in Allensbach, Germany. Years prior, Otto had built a chalet for himself on Luce Hill Road, adjacent to the renowned Von Trapp property. So it was in Stowe Peter and his wife, Anne Marie, would raise their family of 6.

Peter’s architectural firm was small, but instrumental in the development of the Stowe you see today. As the primary architect for the Mountain Company for two decades, his designs grace the area from the renowned Cliff House and Octagon top and base stations to Toll House Base Lodge, The Lodge condominiums and more.

Peter’s designs also enhance the rest of the Stowe community, from the original covered pedestrian bridge in the village (a design he presented to the town as a gift soon after his arrival in town), to the high school and hundreds of single-family homes and businesses.

Peter’s lasting legacy in Stowe, however, are the developments he and Anne Marie did on their own — West Branch Apartments, River Road Apartments, Stowe Village Apartments, Parkside at Stowe, as well as The Mercer House (the original Scheuermann residence) — all of which continue to serve as a wide variety of housing for people in the community, the precise purpose for which Peter designed and built them.

Following his retirement from his architectural business, and from his 15 years in the Vermont Air National Guard, Peter and Anne Marie took their vision, talent and hard work to Ruckersville, VA, where they designed and built the Highlands Golf Park [link], a premier golf practice and learning facility, where Peter was the non-golfer, jack-of-all-trades. He was the general contractor, the building and grounds supervisor, the head greenskeeper, and the mechanic, while Anne Marie took her turn at the front of the house as the golf professional and director of golf.

While Peter was not a golfer, he enjoyed very much those many years giving birth to, and growing, the Highlands into what it remains today, a high-quality golf practice facility that is still family-owned and run.

Peter and Anne Marie retired to Southern Pines, N.C., in 2007, where Peter continued keeping himself busy with architectural projects for family and friends and was a very dedicated and active member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where he was a proud 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
